iBT新托福熟词辟意之POPULATION【无老师词汇系列】

托福作文的词汇的替换真的是一门学问，很多考友在写作文的时候特别喜欢做的一件事情就是在爱词霸之中通过汉译英查询自己想要的单词，因此我们就看到了如下的状况：相当的—oppositely，不合法的; 非法的—unlawful，有意义的—meaningful。其实这些词汇的共性就是用词用偏了。oppositely主要的意思是“相反的”，人们很少会想到这个单词有“相当的”这层含义；unlawful这个单词往往给人一种无法无天的感觉，“非法的”最好还是用illegal；meaningful这个单词大多表示的是意味深长的。其实这几个词汇都是很典型的，很多考友在写作文的时候，经常是把自己想到的中文扔进搜索引擎，然后抓起出现的第一个单词就安装在自己的作文里，最后出现的效果就像是科学怪人一样，成为了一个四不像。 不过今天无老师词汇系列里的这个population则是另外一个情况，在此之前我们总是认为POPULATION这个单词只有“人口”的意思。但是实际上如果你查牛津双解的话，就会发现，其实POPULATION这个单词的第一解释就是“ （地区﹑ 城市﹑ 国家等的）全体居民”请注意，这里是“居民”，而不是“人口”。那么差别在于哪里呢？人口显然就是个数字，但是“居民”就是人了。因此TPO里面就出现了attracting populations in search of food and fuel吸引“人”来搜寻食物，这里显然只有“人”才能做搜寻的动作，而“人口”这个数字是做不了这件事情的，这就是对于词汇的细节性理解。 名词 1 人口 (总数) ,居民人数 This city has a ~ of 350, 000. = The ~ of this city is 350, 000. 这个城市有三十五万人口 What [How large] is the ~ of Taipei?. 台北有多少人口? 2 [the ~; 集合称] (一定区域的) (全体) 居民,市民 The whole ~ of the town came out to welcome him. 央抑镇民都出来欢迎他 3 [用单数; 常与修饰语连用] ‘生物’ (一定区域的) 族群,栖群 the koala ~ of Australia 澳洲的无尾熊族群 pop·u·la·tion n.
